Double-height apartments can be spectacular. They can also be expensive to cool, difficult to furnish and strangely empty if the scale is not handled intentionally.
If the budget supports the volume, I would not try to make a double-height space behave like a normal living room. I would embrace the scale.
High ceilings create a sense of space that furniture cannot reproduce. Large windows can bring extraordinary daylight and views, and the vertical dimension gives architecture a presence that a conventional apartment rarely has.
In Panama this matters. A double-height living room contains substantially more air than the same floor area with a standard ceiling. The mechanical design, glazing, solar exposure and operating expectations should be considered early rather than after the apartment is finished.
Tiny furniture scattered across a huge room can make the architecture feel even emptier. The answer is not necessarily more furniture; it is the right proportions and clear groupings.
Double-height spaces give us opportunities for dramatic curtains, large-scale art, sculptural lighting and architectural walls that would overwhelm a normal room.
This is one of the rare situations where an oversized chandelier can genuinely belong.
Large hard volumes can produce echo. Curtains, rugs, upholstery, acoustic treatments and other absorptive materials can make a dramatic space much more comfortable to live in.
A double-height apartment can be extraordinary when the architecture, lighting, furniture, acoustics and AC are designed together. The mistake is treating it as a standard room with a taller ceiling.
