A hammock in a high-end interior? Absolutely.
I love hammocks and swings because they remind me that a home is not a showroom. It should contain things that make everyday life better—even when they are slightly unexpected beside beautiful stone, custom cabinetry or very formal furniture.
Balconies, terraces, beach houses, family rooms and relaxed homes in places such as Boquete are natural locations. In a very formal living room it can feel strange unless the rest of the design supports it.
The point is not to add a hammock because it is “tropical.” The point is to put it where somebody will genuinely use it.
A hammock or swing creates loads that need proper support. The fixing point should be coordinated with the structure or an appropriate support system, especially for suspended chairs and indoor swings.
This should be resolved before the ceiling or wall is finished—not with a last-minute hook selected only by appearance.
Once a home has children, the line between sophisticated design and everyday pleasure becomes very interesting.
A swing can become one of the most used pieces in the house. It creates movement, play and a place where children naturally gather without needing another oversized toy.
After becoming a mother, I understood this personally. A swing on the balcony became one of those simple things that made breastfeeding and long moments with a baby much more comfortable.
That experience changed how I think about “serious” residential design. Comfort does not need to look serious.
A sophisticated home can have perfect stone, custom millwork, beautiful lighting—and also the perfect place to swing with your baby.
For me, that is not a contradiction. It is what makes the house worth designing in the first place.
