When choosing Panama furniture for a tropical climate, it’s crucial to select materials that can withstand high humidity, intense sun, and the ever-present challenge of insects like termites (comején). • Resistance to Pests: Thanks to its dense grain and natural oils, teak is highly resistant to termites (comején) and other wood-boring insects common in tropical regions.
• Low Maintenance: Teak’s natural oils also protect it from decay and rot, reducing the need for frequent treatments or coatings.
• Aesthetic and Functional Appeal: Panamanian teak tends to be more “masculine” and rustic. Personally, I prefer Indonesian teak, which resembles roble in appearance with its softer, golden tones and smoother texture.

In one of our recent terrace designs, we opted for roble for the custom-made suspended furniture. On top, we placed large ceramic slabs—DEKTON (sourced from EUROSTONE). To enhance functionality, we perforated the lateral parts of the furniture to allow airflow, ensuring it remains cool and durable in Panama’s humid climate. This combination worked perfectly.

In fact, the chairs you see in the design above—though they look like rattan—are actually made from aluminum. Here’s why aluminum stands out:

• Corrosion Resistance: Aluminum reacts with oxygen in the air to form a protective oxide layer that prevents rust. This natural coating makes aluminum a smart choice for humid environments.
• Easy Maintenance: Powder-coated aluminum requires minimal upkeep. Simply wash it with clear water and a mild detergent to keep it looking new.
• Lightweight and Flexible: Aluminum furniture is lightweight and easy to move around, yet durable enough to withstand daily use and Panama’s occasional tropical storms. (In the case of our aluminum chairs, the terrace’s sheltered location means we don’t face strong winds, making them ideal!)
• Insect-Proof: Unlike wood, aluminum is impervious to insects, providing an added layer of durability.

For added protection, choose aluminum furniture with UV-resistant powder coatings to minimize fading and enhance longevity under Panama’s sunny skies.

3. Why These Materials Are Ideal for Panama

Panama’s tropical climate, with its combination of high humidity, strong sun, and frequent rainfall, can wreak havoc on poorly chosen furniture materials. If your home doesn’t use central A/C, avoid wasting money on MDF furniture—even if it’s labeled “hidrófugo.” Traditional fake woods or metals prone to rust and warping will not hold up well.

As an architect I recomand focusing on high-quality materials like wood and aluminum. Teak (my favourite) provides timeless beauty and strength, while aluminum offers modern flexibility and durability. Together, they ensure that your furniture remains stylish, functional, and resistant to the elements.
